Hey people…. I learned something new today!  Cinco De Mayo is not really celebrated in Mexico and is not the day of Mexican Independence.  Some of you probably think I live under a rock for not knowing this, and that’s OK, because I ain’t Mexican.  But all this Mexican talk makes me want some Carne Asada Fries from Lolita’s, mmmmmmmmmmmmm!  Anyway, since Cinco De Mayo is just an excuse for Americans to get wasted, why not get wasted with Collagey, at a swank venue in Little Italy in San Diego, where there is no cover and great music.  Perfect.

Latin Love

And here’s a heads up for the fellas, be on the look out for girls wearing this:

Team Cinco De Mayo

Either they’ll have beer goggles on and you’ll look super fresh to them, or they’ll be shitface wasted and an easy pick-up; either way, the odds are in your favor!

And since I need the education, you all get a piece too.  A lil info on Cinco De Mayo……
Cinco de Mayo is a date of great importance for the Mexican and Chicano communities. It marks the victory of the Mexican Army over the French at the Battle of Puebla. Althought the Mexican army was eventually defeated, the “Batalla de Puebla” came to represent a symbol of Mexican unity and patriotism. With this victory, Mexico demonstrated to the world that Mexico and all of Latin America were willing to defend themselves of any foreign intervention. Especially those from imperialist states bent on world conquest.
Cinco de Mayo’s history has its roots in the French Occupation of Mexico. The French occupation took shape in the aftermath of the Mexican-American War of 1846-48. With this war, Mexico entered a period of national crisis during the 1850’s. Years of not only fighting the Americans but also a Civil War, had left Mexico devastated and bankrupt. On July 17, 1861, President Benito Juarez issued a moratorium in which all foreign debt payments would be suspended for a brief period of two years, with the promise that after this period, payments would resume.

The English, Spanish and French refused to allow president Juarez to do this, and instead decided to invade Mexico and get payments by whatever means necessary. The Spanish and English eventually withdrew, but the French refused to leave. Their intention was to create an Empire in Mexico under Napoleon III. Some have argued that the true French occupation was a response to growing American power and to the Monroe Doctrine (America for the Americans). Napoleon III believed that if the United States was allowed to prosper indescriminantly, it would eventually become a power in and of itself.

In 1862, the French army began its advance. Under General Ignacio Zaragoza, 5,000 ill-equipped Mestizo and Zapotec Indians defeated the French army in what came to be known as the “Batalla de Puebla” on the fifth of May.

In the United States, the “Batalla de Puebla” came to be known as simply “5 de Mayo” and unfortunately, many people wrongly equate it with Mexican Independence which was on September 16, 1810, nearly a fifty year difference. Over, the years Cinco de Mayo has become very commercialized and many people see this holiday as a time for fun and dance. Oddly enough, Cinco de Mayo has become more of Chicano holiday than a Mexican one. Cinco de Mayo is celebrated on a much larger scale here in the United States than it is in Mexico. People of Mexican descent in the United States celebrate this significant day by having parades, mariachi music, folklorico dancing and other types of festive activities.

Whats good. Fran told me to blog up. So im not gona put any pretty links or pretty pictures or pretty anything. Just straight up text.Been busy for a minute, last week of Feb and March have been crazy.  Let’s see from the Chief Rockas, to Bar D on Thursday, to Back2Life at The Office to U31 for 80s and 90s to Modus Lounge up in Bankers Hill. Shouts to Full Clip Djs for putting me on, my Fam Soul Prov/Downbeat Sound System thats always in the loop for sure. Massive Selector is definitely on point.

Shouts to Cros1/Armory Massive for putting me on their 80s and 90s night check em out every Thursdays at U31. Big up to Earthbound Radio for putting me on as well for Uptown Saturdays at Modus Lounge (every 1st and 3rd saturdays at Modus, peep them!).Let’s see I have been battling with myself on how to work on a more effective set. Usually I will prep on something then last minute the set goes out the window, then I start to freestyle it. I think most of us do that. What makes an effective set? well depends on the party you’re at. Usually you’ll have your combos, your old school new school joints. I think its just how you put em together. Gigs will come and go, but its the memorable ones that will stick out. And that moment starts with a great set.  So now I am working on revamping my whole set list (ive been saying this on my facebook or twitter alot lately, even aim) and re-listening to some tracks and re think of good track combinations/blends.

With that said, I will also work on remixes (my hopes of not lagging on this). And play em out on the fly. I can see the reaction on people’s faces sometimes like ‘ehh nothin special about his set’. And I agree. Time to re-rock the party once again. Let’s kill it! Follow me on twitter. twitter.com/ThumbsUNOsave these dates! March 26th Chief Rocka at C Lounge (Happy Bday Aroehn!),March 28th Massive Selector 2 year at Bar Dynamite! BE THERE! thumbprint out.

So BBE is having a huge friggin’ sale….. a 50% off sale!  That’s right  (for those of you less math inclined), that’s half off!  Get over to www.bbemusic.com and check out what they got in their store.  I personally recommend picking up releases from Vadim, Madlib, J-Live, Osunlande, Jazzy Jeff, Will.I.Am, Spinna, and the late great Jay Dee.  Of course that is just to name a few, as their entire catalouge is pretty much proper.  Get over there ASAP as this sale won’t last for much longer!

Shaqawockeez?

shaqawock

In case you missed this years NBA All Star Game, to our pleasant suprise the Jabbawockeez (yes Craig Sager, Jabbawockeez, not ”Wockajabbeez”) opened up the show.  Even more suprising was seeing Shaq’s behemoth ass gettin’ down with the crew.  I must admit, Shaq has some skills on the pop lockin’, but dood needs to expand his repertoire, I think I saw the same moves about 20 times…. but hey, I ain’t complaining, I was laughing my ass off the whole time!

ATCQ Shoe by Adidas

adidas_atcq

So here is Adidas’ version of a ATCQ shoe.  I think I’m going to have to go with Nike’s version.  These Adidas ones are too wild for me.  But hey, a shell toe never hurt anyone, unless of course you get kicked by one…..

De La Dunks

DeLaDunks

So Thumbs put me on the ATCQ Nikes called “Midnight Marauders”…. well I stumbled across these De La Dunks that pay homage to the great De La Soul.  Pretty funky don’t you think?

Nike Tribes
